Book Preface

The book is intended to be a comprehensive and supportive text for those studying employment law, whether they are law students or others. A particular feature of this new edition is a separatemchapter on non-standard working in which we have tried to reflect upon the increase of this type of work and the development of the so-called gig economy.

The big imponderable in the writing of this edition has been the effect of the decision by the UK to leave the EU. Much of our employment law has its derivation in legislation enacted by the EU and we have reflected this in our writing. The government has stated that these employment rights will be incorporated into national law when we leave, but we must wait on developments.
