About This Book

This chapter features both general test-taking strategies and strategies tailored specifically to the AP Biology exam. You’ll learn about the types of questions you’ll see on the official exam and how to best approach them to achieve a top score. In addition, chapter 20 of this book is devoted exclusively to free-response question strategy and sample questions.

Customizable Study Plans

We recognize that every student is a unique individual, and there is no single recipe for success that works for everyone. To give you the best chance to succeed, we have developed three customizable study plans. Each offers guidance on how to make the most of your available study time. With the instructions offered in the following section of this chapter, you’ll be able to select and customize the study plan that is right for you, maximizing your chances of earning the score you need.

A Review of ALL the Relevant Subjects Based on Specific Test-like Questions

The 17 content chapters of this book (chapters 3 through 19) are designed to cover every concept tested on the AP Biology exam. However, unlike the textbook used in your class, this book focuses exclusively on the material you are required to know and examples you can use in free-response questions. Each content chapter includes a series of Learning Objectives that identify key takeaways on each topic and help to organize the chapter. Throughout the text, important terms are highlighted in bold; these terms are compiled in the Glossary, which you can find online. The most commonly tested topics, ones that appear on virtually every AP Biology exam, are demarcated with High Yield icons to help you recognize when information is absolutely essential to know.

Pre- and Post-Chapter Quizzes

Each chapter begins and ends with a mini-quiz—one to test what you already know about the given topic (“Test What You Already Know”) and one to test what you learned by working through the chapter (“Test What You Learned”). You can use the results of these quizzes to guide your studying and chart your progress in mastering the Learning Objectives.

AP Biology Lab Investigations

Several of the content chapters feature sections that begin with “AP Biology Lab” followed by a number and a title. These sections review information that is relevant to the 13 official laboratory investigations that the College Board recommends for students in all AP Biology classes. Whether or not you completed these labs as part of your course, you’ll find the information in these sections helpful; they’re full of high-yield content applicable to multiple-choice and free-response questions.

Full-Length Practice Exams

In addition to all of the exam-like practice questions featured in the chapter quizzes, we have provided three full-length practice exams. These full-length exams mimic the multiple-choice and free-response questions on the real AP exam. Taking a practice full-length exam gives you an idea of what it’s like to answer exam-like questions for about three hours. Granted, that’s not exactly a fun experience, but it is a helpful one. And the best part is that it doesn’t count; mistakes you make on our practice exams are mistakes you won’t make on your real exam.

After taking each practice exam, you’ll score your multiple-choice and free-response sections using the answers and explanations. Then, you’ll navigate to the scoring section in your online resources and input your raw scores to see what your overall score would be with a similar performance on the official exam.
