Book Preface

IF YOUR DOCTOR HAS JUST TOLD YOU that you have diabetes, you’re probably reeling with shock and filled with questions. What does this mean? How will this change my life? How will this affect my longevity?
Take a deep breath and relax. I have some encouraging words for you: it is within your control to recapture your health, or better yet, improve it. This is a disease that, to a startling degree, is treatable and manageable. What it takes is a comprehensive, multipronged approach, using the most up-to-date nutritional know-how, the latest medicines, the most current glucose-monitoring methods, and the best advice on exercise and other lifestyle changes. None of these works without the other—remember that treatment must be intensive and integrative—and all of these approaches go hand in hand if you want to successfully stop diabetes and its complications, including serious damage to the eyes, nerves, heart, kidneys, and blood vessels.
You can change your life and prevent and better manage diabetes. Further, you can significantly delay complications if you already have diabetes. No one is a victim here.
A good example of this positive way of looking at diabetes is Terry, who had come to our clinic for treatment. You would never know she had diabetes. Terry was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes twenty-one years earlier, while she was in high school. When her doctor told her she had the disease, she felt as though her world was “crashing in” around her.
“I didn’t think I could do the things my friends were doing or enjoy things in life like pizza and snacks at parties,” she told me. “My friends even seemed to treat me differently, as they didn’t understand.”
Wisely, her doctor recommend that she attend diabetic camps during the summer, where she lived day to day with other people her age, also with diabetes.
“The camps were great and showed to me that I am no different from anyone else. I just have diabetes and learned that if I controlled it, I could live a normal healthy life.”
Terry has managed her diabetes throughout the years with frequent blood sugar checks and multiple injections of insulin. Not long ago, she gave birth to her first son after carefully managing her diabetes through pregnancy. With regard to her child, she states, “I now have another reason to take care of myself.”
