Book Preface

The preparation of this encyclopedia has taken place over two and a half years, beginning in mid 2009 when I contacted colleagues who would become members of the advisory board, asking them if they would be willing to look over my rationale for the content and organization, and give feedback on suggestions for entries and thematic areas, before I submitted the proposal. I am grateful for all of their work at that initial stage and, in many cases, for entries they have themselves written, and for their reviews of entries submitted by others. In addition to the advisory board members, Nick C. Ellis (University of Michigan), Jaemyung Goo (Georgia State University), Lourdes Ortega (University of Hawai‘i), and Dick Schmidt (University of Hawai‘i), also reviewed and made comments for authors on one or more entries, and I am grateful to them for that. I am very grateful too, to each of the many entry authors for agreeing to contribute, and for taking the time needed to prepare their submissions following the guidelines provided. Chloe Wandler, an exchange student from the University of Oregon helped to prepare the large spreadsheet with contributor information and keep it up to date while she was at Aoyama Gakuin University. That has been a great help. Finally, Ivy Ip and Mike Andrews, and more recently Elysse Preposi and Paola Celli, at Routledge have been very efficient and easy to work with in answering email queries from various contributors, and keeping them updated on the progress of the book, and in dealing with details of the production process.
