Book Preface

When the fi rst edition of this book was published in 2001, the airport industry had received relatively little attention in the printed literature and had been very much overshadowed by the airline sector. Hence the motivation for writing the book. Shortly after publication, the airport sector had to cope with the unparalleled consequences of the events of 9/11, the Iraq War, the outbreak of SARS and the continuing threat of terrorism. These issues were considered in the book’s second edition, published in 2003. At the time of writing that edition, it was unclear what the longer- term impacts of these events would be. Five years on, the third edition in 2008 concluded that 9/11 had been a signifi cant turning point for the industry and that since then it had been operating in a much more unstable environment. This was not just due to security concerns, but also because of changing airline structures and increased environmental pressures. Another fi ve years have passed, and the world has experienced a severe global economic crisis, political unrest and a number of natural disasters. Hence an uncertain environment remains, and arguably is even more volatile.

While considerably more has now been written about the airport industry, there is still a comparative dearth of literature focusing on the up- to-date managerial and business aspects of running an airport. The aim of this book, as of previous editions, is to provide a comprehensive appreciation of the key management issues facing modern- day airport operators. As well as providing an up- to date review of the latest developments and trends, the discussion concerning the airport–airline relationship has been developed further to cover issues such as long- term contracts and the differentiation of airport services and facilities. Similarly, more attention is paid to the passenger experience and the factors that affect it. Numerous other new and diverse topics are covered, including the use of body security scanners; near- field communication technology; airport sister agreements; impacts of passenger taxes; airport carbon accreditation schemes; and social media applications
