Book Preface

The 2015 Coding Workbook for the Physician’s Office is organized in the easiest to understand and most logical format currently available in the market for students and instructors alike. The workbook begins with the basics, a brief foundational overview of the importance of coding and the tools necessary to succeed using this text. It is designed to be used in tandem with any main textbook or as supplemental study material. The workbook begins with coding scenarios for Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), utilizing Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes, and is broken down by body system and then by service performed. The CPT scenarios are followed by HCPCS Level II and CPT and HCPCS Modifiers coding exercises. The bulk of the workbook is comprised of ICD-10-CM and ICD-9-CM coding scenarios.

The workbook concludes with case studies, “Putting It All Together,” where students can review a case study and provide proper codes based on the practice they’ve had using the workbook. Answers to the case studies are provided in the back of the workbook. In the final preparation for students, the workbook offers exam questions for CPT, CPT and HCPCS, and ICD- 10-CM. Selected answers from coding exercises are also provided in the back of the book to enhance student comprehension.

New to the 2015 Coding Workbook for the Physician’s Office

As 2015 approaches, so too does the shift to using ICD-10-CM in medical coding. In anticipation of this industry change, the 2015 Coding Workbook for the Physician’s Office includes an updated section entitled “Moving from the old ICD-9-CM to the new ICD-10-CM.” This section provides students with an overview of the major changes that medical coding will be facing and challenges students to start coding = with ICD-10-CM. Also, “Putting It All Together” includes a column for ICD-10-CM codes in the answers. In addition to the chapter on ICD-10-CM, a secondary answer column has been provided next to the ICD-10-CM answers for ICD-9-CM. All of the coding scenarios have been updated to be applicable with ICD-10-CM coding guidelines. Students will not only have the benefit of learning to code with the ICD-10-CM system but also supplement their practice and enhance their knowledge with ICD-9-CM codes that may still be used by Worker’s Compensation and the auto insurance industry. This significant contribution to the 2015 Coding Workbook for the Physician’s Office embraces the future of coding in the same easy-to-understand and logical format that has been a success since its first publication!
